Question:
I spent a lot of money on my PC and I want to beat everyone on the 3DMark06 scoreboard! Is it going to be the fastest PC in the world? (19/06/2007)

Answer:

In short, no. The guys that score 24000+ (at the time of writing) 3DMark06 points use benchmarking rigs. These 'PCs' use cooling systems that would be hard pushed to fit into your average garden shed and they cool their CPUs and graphics cards well in to minus degrees, literally freezing them. This allows them to run very high voltages into their components which in turn allow them to clock them extremely high. A lot of the time they are sponsored by companies to help them with the costs of the liquid nitrogen and other crazy stuff they use to operate these PCs.

Vadim PCs have been likened to the supercars of the PC world by the magazines reviewing them so if this is true, benchmarking rigs are the drag racers of the PC world. Whilst drag racers are all good and well, you couldn’t really use one to pop down to Tesco’s and get some tea and this is where the problem with them lies.

When overclocking, we set up our PCs with three main factors in mind, stability (for real life use and not just one synthetic benchmark) longevity and noise level. If none of these factors particularly concern you then let us know and we can push your PC a lot further but it is important to remember that you may need advanced troubleshooting and PC hardware skills in order deal with any problems that may arise as well as properly maintain a PC set up like this.
