Answer:

It is reccomended by microsoft to update windows on a regular basis, but just keep in mind that sometimes they produce an update which causes conflictions with certain software/hardware combinations.

Even if this happens though, once a few users have reported the conflition to microsoft it is usually fixed over the next few updates. If you find that after an update your system is near or totally unusable, the best solution is to re-install windows and leave automatic updates off until a fix has been announed in the patch notes on the microsoft website.
