There has been a lot of talk about the Western Digital Raptors. As a result we decided that we would put them to test and see if they lived up to their reputation. Read on to find out!

The test! In order to give the Raptor a fighting chance we saw it only fair to put 2 together in a RAID 0 configuration so the data is split between them to double the read/write speed of larger files. This allows for the resources of both hard drives to be utilised fully by the operating system. So now we are ready to put them to the test. But wait, what do we put the Raptors into? You wont use £200 HDs in a £15 case with a Celeron 2.5Ghz. So we thought just to add some more spice, we would put the raptors into the best PC configuration for today, then to add a little more insanity to the whole system by water cooling it. Why not? So now lets find out what the whole system is made up of. We used 2 systems with 2 different motherboards:

Case: Thermaltake Aluminium Silver Armor Thermaltake Aluminium Silver Armor
PSU: Seasonic S12 Silent 600w PSU Seasonic S12 Silent 600w PSU
Motherboard: DFI LANPARTY UT RDX3200 CF-DR Crossfire skt939 Asus A8N32SLI Deluxe
CPU: AMD Opteron 175 Skt 939 over-clocked to 2.8Ghz AMD Opteron 175 Skt 939 over-clocked to 2.8Ghz
Memory: OCZ 2x1024Mb DDR500 Gold GX XTC Non ECC (x2) OCZ 2x1024Mb DDR500 Gold GX XTC Non ECC (x2)
Hard Drive: 150Gb Raptor X 10000 16mb E-SATA (x2) 150Gb Raptor X 10000 16mb E-SATA (x2)
Storage HD: 250Gb Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 7200 8mb SATA II 250Gb Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 7200 8mb SATA II
Graphics: 2 x ATI X1900XT (master and slave) Nvidia 7900GTX

So now we know the computer specs, let’s have a look inside. When the HD has the feature of showing your data lay on the platters, then it becomes a crime not to show it off, so the Thermaltake Armors with minor modifications accomodated our needs perfectly:
